The theme for the 38th annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk is "We're all in this together." For more than 10 years, Hale Makua has participated in the Visitor Industry Charity Walk. Like the selected theme, it takes everyone at Hale Makua Health Services to raise funds for this event. Our employees are asked to take the lead by coming up with creative fundraisers from food sales to book fairs and even a pie throwing contest. A friendly competition between the different departments and resident neighborhood staff adds an extra level of motivation for employees to fund raise.
In honor of our 70th anniversary we set a goal to raise $70,000, but we hope to exceed that amount. With only eight weeks before this year’s Visitor Industry Charity Walk, our goal of $70,000 is definitely within reach. This year our employees have made a greater effort to include our residents and clients into our fundraisers, like Ruth Fukumoto. Ruth is a participant of our Adult Day Health program and she makes beautiful crochet Pikake lei, as seen in the photo above. She learned to crochet as a young girl and continues to do so almost every day, bringing her supplies with her. It takes Ruth about a week to crochet one strand of lei.
Ruth graciously donated three, double strand crocheted Pikake lei, which will be featured along side other items made by our residents and clients, in a silent auction at Flatbread Company in Paia on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. These silent auction items include art work, eyelash yarn lei, clay pots, and of course Ruth’s crocheted lei. Ruth’s lei-making and contribution to our fundraiser demonstrates ways in which Hale Makua Health Services strives to create opportunities for our kupuna to give as well as receive care.
All sales from this silent auction will go towards the Visitor Industry Charity Walk. On top of that, Flatbread Company will also donate a portion of each pizza sold throughout the night. Plus, the Hawaii Hotel Industry Foundation matches a percentage of the funds that we raise. We can't do this without you, our friends and family. Please choose to support us on March 22nd for good food, door prizes, and an amazing silent auction or make a donation now.
