Resident Ana Daliva moved to Maui in 1995 from Ilocos Norte, Philippines. On Maui, she helped care for her granddaughter, walking her to and from school during the week. The walk was quite a far distance from their home in Happy Valley, and the young child would get tired. Ana remembers making a game of it, chanting “one-two-three-four, one-two-three-four,” like a soldier as they marched together down the road.
To save time and energy, Ana would wait outside the school until class ended. One day, the school principal came out to talk with Ana. After a few conversations, he helped Ana get a job at the school as a custodian.
As time passed, it became more difficult for Ana to work. About two years ago, she came to Hale Makua to receive care. Ana says she likes Hale Makua, and says the staff are nice to her. She especially appreciates one of the CNAs who always takes her meals to the dining area so Ana can eat with her husband who is also a resident. She is also marching to a new beat as she does walking exercises with restorative nursing. Though Ana misses being at home, we’re happy that Ana is glad to be here receiving the care that she needs at Hale Makua.
