When Wailuku Resident Mitsue Tamanaha llast visited the Bingo Store, she found a skirt that she fell in love with. She grabbed her “Bingo Bucks” and happily paid for her newest find that she couldn’t wait to try on. Only to find out that the skirt didn't fit. Nani Maniugo one of her care partners stepped right up to assist her. Nani offered to alter the skirt to make it just the right size for Mitsue. Pictured below is Nani holding Mitsue's newly alterd skirt and a beaming Mitsue.
When we reach out a hand to our elders in ways they may not expect us to, it displays compassion, companionship, and a sense of teamwork. This helps our elders feel like they can make the decisions that they want, and feel supported by those closest to them.
This demonstrates Principle 8: An Elder-centered community honors its Elders by de-emphasizing top-down bureaucratic authority, seeking instead to place the maximum possible decision-making authority into the hands of the Elders or into the hands of those closest to them.
