Many times Father's Day gets overlooked, with more emphasis to honor and celebrate mothers. Perhaps it's because dads don't seek the extra attention and don't expect much in the way of gifts. Whether he is strong and silent or over-enthusiastic, all dads deserve to be thanked for the role they play in our lives.
We are proud to serve so many fathers in our communities. They bring an untold amount of wisdom, knowledge and tradition to our staff, visitors, and other residents. Walking through the courtyards and neighborhoods of Hale Makua, you can catch glimpses of loving interactions between fathers, sons and other family members.
Brian Kakihara, pictured above, visits his father, Satoru, regularly. During this visit, Brian asked his dad if he enjoyed his lunch and shared updates about family members. Although their visit was in an open and busy area, it was evident that they did not notice any of the activity around them. It seemed as if the world around them stopped and in this moment it was just the two of them, father and son.
Many fathers residing in our communities don’t have family members nearby. They yearn for visits or even a quick, “hello, how are you today,” to remind them that they are remembered and part of a family and community. This year, don't forget to thank your father for the things he has taught you. You can make a Father's Day gift in his honor here.
