Donation Helps Residents See Clearly

The residents of our Wailuku campus can now see much clearer thanks to a donation from Doris Voss’ Family of a closed-circuit television (CCTV).  CCTVs are also known as video magnifiers and help to improve the quality of life for many people with low vision.

Like any other sense, vision typically diminishes naturally with age.  As a care provider to the elderly, this CCTV will help remove barriers, expand possibilities, and increase independence for so many of our residents.  Due to low vision and other health issues related to aging, reading is no longer enjoyable for a lot of our residents.  Instead it is an activity that requires much planning and many adjustments.  This CCTV will enhance the lives of our residents by making daily tasks like reading prescription medicine labels, newspapers, medical and other important documents much easier.

Our residents that regularly use the CCTV since we received it one month ago enjoy reading the newspaper daily, doing crossword puzzles and word searches.  Jordan Kahiamoe, Wailuku Activities Director in Training, said “the CCTV has really helped one resident in particular to keep her mind active and focused by reading the newspaper out loud.  This also makes her feel important as she is helping other residents and staff stay connected to things happening here and throughout the world.”  Another resident’s face beamed with joy the first time she used it because it enlarged her crossword puzzles.  As seen in the above photo, residents are better able to read The Maui News.

In case you are wondering how this device works, the CCTV unit combines a powerful magnifying camera with a video monitor.  This combination allows the user to view material at a variety of magnification levels, suited for all needs from very low to extremely high.  Unfortunately, CCTVs and other quality enhancing devices are very costly.

Mahalo to Doris Voss’ family for kindly donating this CCTV to our Wailuku campus residents.  We greatly rely on the generosity of our community members, family and friends to be able to continue our programs and services.  Donations, such as this, remind us that the services we provide are important and much needed in our island community.  This CCTV is a valuable tool that we are very fortunate to have.
