Early on the morning of April 23rd, twenty-five of our staff and family members (pictured above) picked up trash along the highway in Maalaea as part of Matson Foundation's Ka Ipu `Aina program. This community partnership program has been successful in cleaning inland and coastal areas throughout the state for the past 15 years.
With many hands helping, we picked up a couple of truckloads of trash that included foam, reusable plastic containers, and hundreds of cigarette butts. All of the rubbish that is carelessly thrown or left on the side of the road potentially end up in our oceans which is detrimental to the sea life. Not to mention how unsightly it looks against a beautiful backdrop of blue skies and sandy beaches.
Hale Makua Health Services seeks opportunities to care for our island and protect our natural resources outside of our daily efforts of caring for our kupuna. It was also our way of doing our part to celebrate Earth Day. This opportunity helps us appreciate the beauty around us that we sometimes take for granted. Additionally, the Matson Foundation made a donation to Hale Makua Health Services, which helped us get to our goal for the Visitor Industry Charity Walk. Mahalo Matson Foundation and HMHS staff for your help in caring for our `aina!
