The Hand-n-Hand team in Wailuku has tackled a list of challenges in their Wailuku community for the past two and a half years. Out of the multiple projects the group has resolved there are two that they are most proud of accomplishing.
Members of the group presented security issues including the loitering of strangers in the parking lot, stolen vehicles, gas siphoning, and damage to their personal cars. First, the group came up with repairing the existing gates in the parking lot. Once the gates were repaired the team communicated to the evening and night shift when to open and close the gate.
The second big project the Hand-n-Hand team tackled was working closely with maintenance on how solar lights could be installed in the front and back parking lot. It was a long process, but the lights are now up and functioning.
The group feels ecstatic that they were able to work together and help with a few issues in their community.
Feedback from the evening and night shift staff:
- “New installed lights are an A+ and staff can see their cars in the parking lot clearer (view) thru the windows (that looks out to the parking area) during the night. As far as strangers there is still some roaming around but at least there have been no break in.”
- “I like having the gates closed at night 110% because there are no car break in, no stolen cars.”
- “Now that the new lights are installed it is brighter in the parking lot and we feel more comfortable going in and out of the parking area during the night. There are less strangers roaming around.”
- “The gates deter unwanted people. It is really good to have it working again.”
