Since 2010, nearly all but a few Maui physicians stopped admitting patients to the hospital and to Hale Makua’s nursing homes, which has meant that if you did not have a physician caring for you, you cannot be admitted to a nursing home for skilled nursing, rehabilitation or long term care. This is not the case if you are a Kaiser patient as they provide physicians services at the hospital and at Hale Makua’s nursing homes for their members.
To ensure admissions continued from the Hospital and the community and that non-Kaiser patients who need nursing home care continue to be admitted and cared for in our nursing homes, Hale Makua has been flying in a temporary physician. This situation is unique to our organization and costs us over $400,000 a year. Unfortunately this cost is not covered by Medicaid.
Thanks to much advocating by our CEO, Tony Krieg, and a Grant In Aid request submitted to the State, $350,000 for physician services has been included in the State FY17 budget. We still have to get the funds released by the Governor, but being included in the budget gets us a step closer!
