Lion Rings in the New Year

2016 has started with a boom of excitement as we celebrate the Chinese New Year! A traditional Chinese lion dance was held on February 9, 2016. The boom of the drums set a steady rhythm as the lion wound it's way up and down the halls through every Neighborhood. The hungry lion was very pleased to find eager residents ready to feed him red envelopes filled with money for good luck.

Each year, a Chinese lion costume has to be borrowed from local organizations. This allows us the opportunity to have a traditional celebration in which all of our residents can enjoy right here. With each passing year it gets increasingly harder for our staff to secure a Chinese lion costume to borrow, and this year it seemed impossible. That's when our very own Maintenance Director, Mark Souza, accepted the challenge to build a Chinese lion costume for our own use.

Mark spent many long hours of his personal time carefully crafting and constructing an amazing work of art. The amount of intricate details is evidence of the thoughtfulness and caring that went into his creation. Residents, and staff alike, were thrilled to see the end result. It was additionally exciting to see the lion in action at our annual Chinese New Year celebration. The residents decided to name the lion, Mark the Lion, after it's amazingly talented creator.

This year's lion dance was an extra special experience for all of us knowing that a lot of "heart" work from one of our team members went into making it. Mahalo, Mark, for your continuous time and dedication to our residents!
