Two separate photovoltaic (PV) systems are up and running at Hale Makua Kahului. One is on the roof of the Weinberg Center and the other on a newly built parking structure in the Weinberg parking lot. Pictured above is the parking structure created for the installation of our new PV system, which also adds shade.
On average, we expect to reduce our electrical costs by 20% and are very excited to see the actual savings. As a non-profit that relies heavily on fundraising to support five vital programs (Adult Day Health, Care Homes, Home Health, Rehab) in addition to our long-term care nursing home, we are constantly seeking ways to minimize operational expenses to be able to enhance our programs and improve our facilities.
The amount of solar photovoltaic systems has been increasing at a very quick rate. Not only does it reduce electrical costs, it promotes renewable energy by maximizing the heat and light created by the sun and turning it into electricity. It produces clean energy because it has no emissions, no moving parts, it doesn’t make noise and it doesn’t need water or fossil fuels to produce power.
It makes a lot of sense for home and business owners in Hawai`i to install PV systems since the sun shines all year long, which is exactly what HMHS did. The process began many years ago with financial research. After all that time, we can finally say that the PV installation at our Kahului homes is complete.
We want to thank all of the family members, visitors and providers for their understanding and patience throughout the entire installation process. PV systems play an important part in our daily lives. We at HMHS are happy to do our part to improve environmental quality and contribute to a strong energy economy.
