We celebrated National Nursing Home Week from May 10th through 16th, bringing together our community of residents, rehab patients, families and staff. This year’s national theme for the week long event was Bring on the Fiesta!
The Activities teams in Kahului and Wailuku thoughtfully planned fun games, dress up days, entertainment, crafts and dancing that brought the theme to life while focusing on family, life and love. This careful planning ensured that individuals with limitations would still be able to participate in some way. This was also a time to educate our community of the importance to make time for loved ones and being connected to others, especially those needing long term care.
The celebration started on Mother’s Day with special entertainment to honor all mothers. On May 11th, there was a test of knowledge with a Fiesta Pop Quiz followed by an excitement-filled Macarena dance contest. The fun continued with La Cucaracha team races on May 12th, which involved teams of staff and residents, wheeling a wheelchair seating two people, throwing, and singing. Resident and staff talents were on display at the Craft and Food sale on May 13th. Everyone was delighted to eat some delicious treats and buy beautiful handmade crafts. Resident Lynn Yamakawa and care partner Annie Orsono are pictured above sporting their crazy hair dos from May 14th's Crazy Hair Day. Lynn's original hair do was his own design. The week's events culminated with a May Day celebration on May 15th.
Overall, it was a great, fun-filled week that gave residents, rehab patients, care staff, and family members the opportunity to build stronger relationships through unique activities. We look forward to celebrating National Nursing Home Week next year!
