At 76 years old, Joey Durante has always been independent and active. For instance, on Memorial Day, he can be seen waving the American flag in honor of our fallen heroes. This suddenly changed when he injured his hip and could no longer perform activities of daily living (ADL), such as eating, bathing and dressing, on his own. He entered Hale Makua on a short-term basis to receive physical rehabilitation services for his hip injury. Joey was in a lot of pain upon being admitted. Although he knew he needed help to get better, he was not completely happy relying on others for help with tasks that he normally did himself.
Thinking he would never walk again, Joey was fearful that his life would be permanently changed, no longer having the freedom to help the community and honor Veterans. He didn’t know where to start on his own, so he trusted the medical team and care partners to put him on the path to recovery.
Joey is a fighter and this instinct helped him to do all of the physical therapy exercises the Rehab staff required of him. His fight to regain his independence aided in a quick recovery. After three weeks, Joey was able to return home but continued with our Rehab services three times a week as an outpatient. Joey got stronger with each session, showing immense improvement, and was finally cleared from needing physical therapy.
On his final day with Rehab by Hale Makua, Joey said the services he received here “gave him a second chance. Rehab is a place for healing and the support from the staff is a perfect 10.” Although Joey is not completely healed, he has gained a lot of his strength back and is now able to do activities of daily living on his own. Rehab helped Joey find his way home.
Rehab by Hale Makua tailors their services to meet the needs of each individual in order to regain or retain their optimal level of independence through physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, respiratory therapy and wellness services. Jessica Groff, Rehab Manager, and the rest of the Rehab team gives individuals the skills and hope to be independent after injury or illness.
