The Walter and Cathy Scott Memorial Fund was established in 1996 with the purpose of providing scholarships to non-professional and non-administrative staff at Hale Makua for tuition, books or registration for additional education in areas of healthcare. We proudly announce this years recipients of the Walter and Cathy Scott scholarship are Joyce Della and Ashley Ramos.
Joyce is originally from the Philippines and pursued a career in nursing upon moving to Maui. She is now a Registered Nurse, here at our Kahului campus and has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. She aspires to be a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) someday. This scholarship will help her attain a Doctor of Nursing Practice bringing her one step closer to achieving her goal of being an FNP. Joyce, pictured in the photo, receives her scholarship award from Kahului Administrator, Connie Miller.
Ashley's mother instilled in her the importance of caring for others giving her a desire to work in healthcare. Ashley is currently a CNA at our Wailuku campus and is working towards receiving an Associates degree in Liberal Studies. She then hopes to get into the Nursing Program at University of Hawaii Maui College where she will study to receive a Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree. Before becoming an employee, Ashley volunteered with our organization throughout high school.
Joyce and Ashley are just two of more than 400 skilled and caring employees that deliver quality healthcare everyday to those in our care. We are grateful to the Walter and Cathy Scott Memorial Fund for creating opportunities for our care partners to gain education and achieve personal goals.
The Walter and Cathy Scott Memorial Fund was developed by the late Cathy Scott who was a member of the Hale Makua Auxiliary where she spent many hours volunteering. Giving to others was a cornerstone of her life of service. She came to Maui in 1974 while on vacation and met her late husband Walter Scott. Together with Walter she established the Walter and Catherine Scott Scholarship Fund. Proceeds of this gift provide financial assistance to countless employees in need so they can further their education in the healthcare field.
