Walking through the halls on a sunny morning, all I can hear is the soft sound of a strumming ukulele and a voice singing an old time favorite Hawaiian song. As I proceed to tuxedo junction, the central gathering place in Kahului Hale Makua, I’m greeted with a smile from Activities Assistant, Danyel Kahiamoe serenading our residents and clients as they sit back and enjoy. Often times you’ll catch Danyel and the other Activities staff in the morning doing crafts, or playing games with our clients and residents, and sometimes, they get a little added bonus and enjoy a morning mele to start their day.
One of the great things about our staff at Hale Makua, is how talented so many of the are. Whether it’s playing the Ukulele, singing, dancing, or anything in between, they are always so willing to perform on a moments notice just to see our residents happy and entertained.
This demonstrates Eden Alternative Principle 5: An Elder-centered community imbues daily life with variety and spontaneity by creating an environment in which unexpected and unpredictable interactions and happenings can take place. This is the antidote to boredom.
