Congratulations to our most recent group of 26 Certified Eden Associate graduates who successfully completed the three day journey into the world of person-directed care on January 31, 2014. As the most widely practiced, comprehensive approach to person-directed care, Certified Eden Associate Training offers practical tools, resources, and inspiration that empower individuals and teams to initiate and maintain effective change in long-term care.
Upon completing the training, care partner, Delva Valdez, from the Activities team shared "Certified Eden Associate Training is a really great thing. The Principles revolving around loneliness and helplessness really hit home for me because I see it everyday. At the end of the training, our group came up with the idea to 'adopt a tutu' or a resident who doesn't have a lot of visitors, to help prevent loneliness. Training was fun, and would be a good thing for everyone to go through." Another care partner, Johnny Tonyokwe from the Maintenance team said; "It was good to learn more about what we can change for the benefit of the residents."
Through the Eden Alternative’s Ten Principle approach to person-directed care, participants were equipped and inspired to initiate change; gained powerful team building skills to strengthen care partnerships; learned how person-directed care drives improved quality and financial performance; got connected to a broad network of person-directed care resources worldwide; and contributed to reframing the culture of care and perceptions of aging in our society.
In addition to now having a total of 205 our care partners (about 40% of all employees) trained as Certified Eden Associates, we have 13 trained Neighborhoods Guides, and have reached Milestone 2 on the Eden Alternative Path to Mastery ™: the Art of Creating a Caring Community. Neighborhood Guides serve as facilitators, coaches, business communicators, and Elder advocates. Their efforts increase organizational flexibility; improve quality of care; create higher satisfaction for everyone involved; reduce employee turnover and absenteeism; and deepen and sustain implementation of person-directed care. In the Path to Mastery ™: the Art of Creating a Caring Community Milestone 1, the focus of mastery related to the preparation of leadership, including formal leadership and the Board of Directors, within our homes for the Eden Alternative journey. The Path to Mastery ™ Milestone 2 focused on the education of informal leaders, Elders, families, volunteers, and healthcare professionals.
In 2009, Hale Makua Kahului and Wailuku became Hawaii’s first and only Eden Registered Homes. Thanks to the continued efforts of our staff and the support of our community, we have successfully renewed our status as Eden Registered Homes in 2011 and again in 2013.
